Why is my return still pending? (updated 3-16-21)

***Closing thread 3/16.
Users are experiencing an accepted return with TurboTax and a pending status with the IRS. The IRS is doing its best to keep up with this year's circumstances. Please refer to the IRS Website: https://www.irs.gov/refunds for updates on your personalized situation.

2-26 Update: Why is my return still pending (With TurboTax?)
Earlier this tax season, many people noticed that their return was "pending" for more than the average 48 hours. This pending status meant we noticed an issue that may have caused your return to be rejected and did an extra review to assess the reason it was flagged, resolved it for you, or identified what you needed to do to ensure everything is accurate and your return is accepted.

---the majority of users should have seen a rejected or accepted status since that time.

New Mexico State, as of (2/26) is currently experiencing a backlog building up. This week, they are increasing the volume of returns retrieved, and expect to clear the pending backlog within the next few days.

If you are not filing with New Mexico and it's been 48 hours since you've submitted your return, please comment on this thread.

I was really starting to worry. I eFiled my New Mexico tax return on Feb 14 and now it's March already and it is still marked as Pending. I don't like it when tax filling doesn't go well that's why I use TurboTax.

Bring your issue to the attention of the Office of the President.  Here's the email address: officeofthepresident @ intuit . com .  And here's their executive's webpage:

    mslatinlady:

Finally got a hold of a customer service rep today, since the office of the President rep (Carol) never got back to me, and spent over an hour on the phone. And that was after I got a call-back. Most of it was spent on hold. The rep was unable to give me any information why the IRS still does not show receiving my return when Turbo Tax says they accepted it on 2/13. And she had no information either on why my NM filing has been pending since 2/13. Finally she put me on hold again for 20 minutes then cut the call off.

Called back and I was on the call another hour and 22 minutes, 35 minutes on hold. The results of this call was that Turbo Tax could not provide any information except the transmission number to call the IRS to have THEM trace the filing after 21 days. Have to wait another week before I can confirm anything.

Turbo Tax has made it virtually impossible to get any assistance or answers for the e-filing problems. Don't know if you've noticed but even GabiU, the Community Manager, is not responding to users any more.

This might help some of those wanting to contact the IRS. I did this morning, it hasn’t been 21 days but its never taken this long for a refund to process. The agent (very friendly) said they have extremely strict rules and unless its been 21 days she’s forbidden to access my account.  HOWEVER, due to all the problems everyone is having this year, if the IRS has your return and its processing, starting March 5th you can call them and they will research your return regardless of whether its been 21 days or not. March 5th at 7AM I’ll be on the phone. Cheers.

I have E-flied my taxes. My New Mexico state taxes have not been accepted. It has been over a week. What do I need to do?  My federal and Colorado have been accepted.

I efiled 02/17/2021 and mine still says IRS accepted my return, but pending. It's now 03/01/2021. What gives? I'm in WA State

I'm having trouble understanding all of that the way it's phrased.  I'm not sure what site "mine" refers to or where exactly you are seeing the word "pending."   You may need to explain it differently, but first let's try walking through it in order this way:

Did you use Online TurboTax?  If so, log in and look at your Tax Home.  What status is showing for the efiled Federal return; i.e., which of these terms is displayed--pending, accepted, rejected, printed, or what?

If the Tax Home is showing a status of "accepted", it will always show the status as "accepted."   That refers only to the efile status.  TurboTax does not get any feedback from the IRS as your return moves through processing at the IRS or afterwards.

If the Tax Home is showing "accepted", then if you are due a Federal refund, what is displayed when you use the "Where's My Refund" tool at this IRS website?

Turbo tax says my return was accepted but on the irs website(irs.gov) it says it’s still pending with no bars. What does this mean??

Where is my federal tax return?

I filed mine on 2/27/21 and it is still saying pending also. I called and spoke to a turbo tax representative, who then gave me the number to the IRS with an extension number and the system doesn't even give an option to input an extension number. I still don't have any more clarification than I did before. I think that TurboTax should be able to provide some kind of information since it was their software that was used to file my taxes. At least rather it was rejected or whatever the case may be. I do know one thing I won't be using Turbo Tax in the future and I will be telling everyone I know not to use it either because there is no follow-up or clarification to the customer's concerns or issues!

That is very common.  MANY returns filed 2/27 will be pending.

TurboTax only gives the general IRS (most returns are processed within 21 days) date. The actual date is known only by the IRS. TurboTax also does not adjust the general date for anything on the tax return. TurboTax receives no feedback from the IRS after filing.

The IRS says most refunds will be issued within 21 days - some faster, some longer.

Each tax return is evaluated on it's own merits. There is no first-in-first-out. Two similar tax return submitted at the same time can have totally different processing times based on IRS criteria for examining tax returns that the IRS does not divulge.

Some returns will be held for ID verification or other verification. The IRS will send a letter if they require more information to process your tax return.

I am already aware of all the information that you included in your reply thanks. However, as I said before my concern was that it still says pending on the turbo tax site in addition to the IRS website not having any information at all. It's really simple it has never taken this long before to say rather it was accepted or rejected which is the only clarification that I was seeking.

Hopefully, you've received an "accepted" or "rejected" in the past 24 hours, seems like more New Mexico returns are going through.

    Thank you for your patience!

Why is my return still pending?

    Hi, here is my situation:

    • Fed return accepted 2/12, refund expected, second PPP credit requested.
    • NYS return accepted 2/13.
    • NYS refund deposited 3/1.
    • S-corp return filed 3/5 (due to Intuit delays in releasing the NY shareholder info form)
    • WMR site says no information.
    • IRS view my account shows nothing for 2020.

Is it possible for personal return to be delayed until corp return (with K-1) is filed?  I had everything done in early February so I could use the K-1 in my personal returns.  Just couldn't file corp return until now, due to Intuit delays.

donnymccoy: Just like the dependency that a federal return must be accepted before a state return will be accepted. The s-corp return will likely need to be accepted before the personal returned, with K-1's, will be. I have an s-corp as well but I never file the personal until I file the s-corp.

Yeah, that makes sense.  I never thought about this before because I always file corp first and then personal on tax day since I usually write a small check each year.  This time around, I filed personal first because I expected the NY form to be available within days - not three weeks later.

    Thanks for the confirmation!
