Where do we enter numbers for form RRB-1099-R?

Only one of us was a RR employee, the other receives an additional amount to augment Social Security.  Where do we enter this additional income, reported to use on Form RRB-1099-R?

Where do we enter numbers for form RRB-1099-R?

Be careful of where you enter the forms.

 

Ther are two possible forms.....in two separate menu item areas.

 

1) an RRB-1099-R goes in where you enter the regular 1099-R forms.  When you start into that area to type in the data manually, you will be given 4 choices, one of which is an RRB-1099-R 

 

2) The other possible form is the RRB-1099  (but no trailing "-R").  that goes in where you enter the Social Security SSA-1099, and when you get into that Q&A there is a checkbox to indicate it is the RRB-1099 version.

Where do we enter numbers for form RRB-1099-R?

Your RRB-1099-R is entered in the same section as other Forms 1099-R.

 

As noted by @SteamTrain, RRB benefits payments are reported on one of two forms, depending on the type of payment:

 

  • Form RRB-1099 (Payments by the Railroad Retirement Board) is a blue form and reports Social Security equivalent benefits payments, which are entered in the same place as SSA-1099s. 

To enter your RRB-1099:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account and open or continue your return.
  2. Search for rrb-1099 and select the Jump to link in the search results, or select the Wages & Income section from the left menu bar, scroll down the list of items and select Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099)
  3. On the Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits in 2023 screen, answer Yes.
  4. On the Tell us about the benefits you received screen, select Railroad Retirement benefits (Form RRB-1099) and fill in the boxes that appear.

 

  • Form RRB-1099-R (Annuities or Pensions by the Railroad Retirement Board) is a green form and reports non-Social Security equivalent benefits payments, which are entered in the same place as 1099-Rs.

To enter your RRB-1099-R (green form):

 

To enter your RRB-1099-R:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account and open or continue your return.
  2. Search for rrb-1099-r (lower-case, with the dashes) and select the Jump to link in the search results or scroll down the list of items in Wages & Income and select IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  3. On the Did you get a 1099-R in 2023? screen, select Yes.
    • If you land on the Your 1099-R Entries screen instead, click Add Another 1099-R and Continue.
  4. Continue through the screens and choose how you'd like to import your info.
  5. If you choose Type it in myself, select U.S. Railroad Retirement Board (RBR 1099-R) on the Who gave you a 1099-R? screen.
  6. Select Continue and follow the instructions to enter your RRB-1099-R info.
