You would enter your anticipated IRA contributions in the Deductions and Credits > Retirement and Investments > Traditional and Roth IRA Contributions section of your return. Then, if the contribution is deductible it will be entered on Form 1040 Schedule 1 line 20. Going through the contributions section of your return will allow TurboTax to determine the amount of contribution that is allowed and whether it can be deducted or not.
Use the following steps to go directly to that section of your return:
- On the top row of the TurboTax screen, click on Search
- This opens a box where you can type in “IRA contributions” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here)
- The search results will give you an option to “Jump to IRA contributions”
- Click on the blue “Jump to IRA contributions” link and enter your information
