Can you change the code on 1099-R distribution from "T" to "Q" without notifying the broker?

1099-R has code "t" in box 7. Taxpayer has held ROTH at least 5 yrs. Distribution s/b nontaxable. What should I do?

No, you are not permitted to change the code, nor do you need to.  After entering the Form 1099-R as received, click the Continue button on the Your 1099-R Entries page.  When TurboTax asks, indicate that you had a Roth IRA prior to 2013.

After entering the form, did you continue to answer all the followup questions?  Look at your 1040 to see if it's taxable.  Are you using the desktop CD /Download version?

Using GoSystems RS. It allows you to switch the code to "Q" qualified distribution. So that is what I will do.

Do not do that, as the IRS will just change it back to match the actual 1099-R.
