I live in California and receive a retirement from Idaho. They took out federal taxes of $944. in 2024. I have gotten so many conflicting answers as to what I should do:
File a separate tax return for Idaho.
Mark "yes" if I received income from another state.
I don't need to file a separate tax return in a state that I don't live in but receive a pension from. But when I entered the info on Turbo Tax, I did not get credit for the federal taxes in the amount of $944. that were taken out of my pension.
I have several sources of retirement and entering the info should not be so difficult, but it is.
I appreciate any help. Thank you!

If you did not live in Idaho in 2024 you do not file a 2024 Idaho tax return. You file a federal return and a state return for the state you actually live in, which you say is CA. Enter the 1099R for the pension into your federal return and the information will flow to the CA return. The software will then follow the tax laws of CA pertaining to the taxability of the pension in CA. CA does not tax Social Security, but does tax certain other kinds of retirement income.
Thank you so much for answering my question/dilemma. I entered everything you suggested on my Tax Return and it all worked out ! I was then able to file both my Federal and State Returns, no problem.
