You are correct - starting in 2016, MN stopped taxing military pension income.

MN has not yet approved the 2016 MN tax forms and instructions that are needed to exempt military pension income. The estimated release date for 2016 MN tax forms is January 27, and TurboTax will promptly update our tax software to implement the change.

See Forms Availability Table for TurboTax State (except Business) for additional details and any changes.

Here is how trigger that subtraction in Turbotax:

  1. Select State from the left side menu.
  2. Click Edit to the right of Minnesota.
  3. Continue until you get to Tell Us About Any Income Adjustments.
  4. Check the second box under Military Income
  5. Once you check the box, it will ask for the amount of your military retirement or pension pay.
  6. Enter the amount that is in box 2a of your military 1099-R.

Please note, you may not claim this subtraction if you claim the  Credit for Past Military Service.
