Why can’t I enter my husbands social security disability information form SSA-1099 into the program for 2019?? Program glitch??

What is preventing you from entering the information from the SSA-1099?

To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099

I did multiple times for a week and still was unable to. This isn’t my first filing with turbo tax. I believe that it’s a program glitch. I have already filed and guess I will have to eventually amend our return.

Yes, if you have already filed, the only way to add this income is to do an amendment. There is no glitch, but you are not allowed to change a return that has been filed and accepted, unless you amend your tax return.

This is how you do it in TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents, click Show on the right.
  3. Select 2019 and then click Amend (change) return.
  4. Once you get to the screen that asks what you need to change, select Social Security.
  5. Enter the information on your SSA-1099 and then answer the questions.
  6. Carefully follow the instructions to finish your return. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal on amended returns. If you will get more money back by amending, the refund box will show you the amount. If you owe money because of your changes, the number will be in red.

When finished, follow the instructions for printing and mailing your amended return as amendments can't be e-filed.

Keep in mind, the amendment is a separate tax return from your original return. If your original return shows a refund, you will still get that refund.

If your amended return shows a refund too, you will get a second refund.

If your amendment shows that you owe, it is because your original refund was too high and you have to pay back part of it. If you owe, pay the amount before April 15 to avoid penalties.

I'm having the same problem.  How do you enter the SSA-1099 information?

What happens when you try to enter the information from your 1099-SSA? Remember, we in the Community cannot see your private data nor the screen you are on.

Do you follow the instructions above from DoninGA to get to the right screen?
