We sold our primary residence in 2021. We received a Substitute Form 1099-S and a settlement statement.

Thank both you! We are in your debt.  I went to the Sale of Home section and the only thing that looked odd was the "Do you wish to use the available main home sale exclusion for sales" was checked no. I assume I'd want to check that yes?  Did so and lost a lot of my tax burden.  Sound about right?

Yes, that sounds about right.  When you said yes, you wanted to use the home sale exclusion, you removed the gain on the sale of your home from your income.  Doing this decreased your tax liability, which would be why you saw your tax burden decrease.

Thank you!  We thought it had to be something simple but was unable to find it.  Very happy now! 🙂
