If your total income is less than your standard deduction and you do not have self-employment income of more than $400 or receive insurance through the marketplace, you do not need to file a return.

 

The 2024 Standard Deductions are as follows:

  • Married Filing Joint (MFJ)              $29,200
  • Married Filing Separate (MFS)      $14,600
  • Head of Household (HOH)             $21,900 
  • Single                                                 $14,600                                

Blind or over 65 and MFJ or MFS add $1,550

Single or HOH if blind or over 65 add $1,950

Depending on whether or not you have other income, you SS may be taxable. 

 

If you fall into the following, 85% of your social security is taxable income

  • Single with income above $34,000
  • Married Filing Jointly with income above $44,000
  • Married Filing Separate regardless of income

If you fall into the following, 50% of your social security is taxable income

  • Single with combined income between $25,000-$34,000
  • Married Filing Jointly with combined income between $32,000 and $44,000

Your combined income is calculated by adding your

  • AGI plus
  • Nontaxable Interest plus
  • 1/2 of your social security Benefits
