I entered two 1099-R's for RMD's. When I looked at the 1040 form lines 4a and 4b it showed only one RMD while 4b showed the other. So I looked at the 1099 and saw I had set the code wrong, instead of a 7 it was a T. I changed the T to a 7. Now it shows nothing in line 4a and the entire RMD total in 4b. I'm OK with that but why doesn't it show the same total on 4a?

When the total gross amount of IRA distributions is taxable, the IRS instructions for Form 1040 lines 4a and 4b indicate that line 4a is to be left blank and only line 4b is to be populated.

Thanks. That's the reason.
