My Federal tax amount goes up when I input Roth contributions? If I delete the Roth the tax owed goes back down to the amount before inputting the Roth contribution?

I follow TT filing "flow"; don't skip around.

I wait until the last "minute" to file.  (usually end of March/beginning of April.)

I contribute the max allowed each yr; incl. catch-up.

Married, filing Joint.; I do not exceed my MAGI for Roth contributions.

Doesn't the on-line version do this?  That's why I know my tax liability shoots up when I enter the Roth contribution.

Ok ... with the ONLINE version (which will not be operational again until sometime in December) to see the actual forms you need to keep going to the tools and all you can see of the return is just the 1040 and unless you pay for the program before filing you cannot see the rest of the forms/worksheets and you have to take several steps to get and view the PDF.   You are just looking at the Refund-O-Meter to see the tax "shoot up" and not understanding the underlying cause ... you can only see that if you look at all the forms and the underlying worksheets.

FYI ...@ the intuit site....     the online Deluxe   is currently $60 + another $45 for the state = $105

And the Downloaded Deluxe is $70 + $20 to efile the state (optional fee... you can print and mail it for free) = $90   ( If you do not need to file a state you can use the BASIC version which is even cheaper)

Thus you get a superior product for less than the online version .... I always recommend the Downloaded version if your computer is capable of handling the program.  If you shop around (especially since you say you don't file until March) you will find the prices drop at respectable retailers as they try to get rid of the excess stock .... watch for specials and coupons but beware of Too-Good-To-Be-True prices from no name retailers as their downloads can have spyware or worse in them. (If you google search you can get one on sale right now ... Best Buy has Deluxe with state  for $60)

How does the "down loaded" version keep up with yr to yr information like the on-line one?  (such as capital losses etc.?)

Ok ... the programs work exactly the same ... the prior year info is transferred from one year to the other to keep the continuity.  All you need to do to switch to the downloaded version is to transfer the 2018 info to the 2019 program ... so if you have not yet downloaded the PDF and .tax2018 file from the online system yet then do so now  AND  do the same for all the prior year returns since you will lose access to them if you do not use the online version going forward.

If you prepared your 2018 return online, in order for your previous year tax information to transfer into your Desktop software you need to download your 2018 Online return as a .tax2018 file.
