Mistakes on Social Security and IRA RMD income

I had over $50,000 total Social Security "income" and the Federal sheet showed ZERO and was not allowed to change. My IRA distribution was included twice; as income and as a capital gain. I moved to an assisted living facility just a few weeks

Mistakes on Social Security and IRA RMD income

For the social security income, you may have entered it but it may not be taxable, especially if you didn't have a lot of other income in addition to it. You can look on your Form 1040 to see if it is listed on line 6(a) and you will see the taxable amount, if any, on line 6(b).

To view your form 1040 and schedule 1 to 3:

  1. Choose Tax Tools from your left menu bar in TurboTax Online while working in your program
  2. Choose Tools
  3. Choose View Tax Summary
  4. See the Preview my 1040 option in the left menu bar and click on it
  5. Choose the Back option in the left menu bar when you are done

If your retirement distribution is showing as capital gain income, you may have entered it as a Form 1099-B by mistake. You can check on that and delete the entry by following these steps:

1. Choose the Tax Tools option on your left menu bar while working on your return

2. Choose Tools

3. Choose the Delete a form option under Other Helpful links

4. Find the Form 1099-B in the list and delete it
