CAN NOT UPDATE Social Security - 2024 TurboTax

Oh BTW, the same thing happens when I tried to enter my property tax. I had supporting details in my 2023 return that was brought over to the 2024 return.  I got an initial "let's see ..." screen, and when I clicked on any of the options to enter, it went back the summary screen. My supporting details had the previous topic entries with zero dollars, deleting it made it work OK.

I can't say if the last update fixed either problem or not, after I corrected my current return, I didn't go back to test it on a new return with transferred data. Isn't that is what the TT people should test and tell us?

Yes, I am not surprised that this type of problem is showing up in other places as well.

BTW, I LOVE SUPPORTING DETAILS.

But you know, some time back I posted a VERY LONG POST praising Supporting Details and at the same time, COMPLAINING about the lack of consistency in being able to use supporting details in certain situations as well as complaining about the inconsistent way in which supporting details was accessed (clicks, double clicks, right-button clicks, etc.) - probably a couple of years back.

Nevertheless, I still love Supporting Details - just wish they would clean up the operation of its use.

CAN NOT UPDATE Social Security - 2024 TurboTax

I have the same problem which I have seen posted by multiple individuals.  Trying to update this SSA field just cycles back to the same point. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Turbo Tax multiple 3 times with no fix. I have seen no proposed solution that has helped. Please help.

If you have used supporting details in your 2023 return, and have transferred that data to your 2024 return, this loop back seems to happen. Please see the best solution at the beginning of this thread. maybe the only thing we left out was that you need to delete the supporting details OR the entire "Social Security" forms while in the "Forms" area. I found it easier to delete the Social Security Form.  Specifically, when you are in the "Step-by-Step" which is where TT starts and most all of your work in TT is entered, click on "Forms" in the blue area near the top, on the right. The Forms window should open.

Navigate down the left side to the "Social Sec" form, click on it, then go to the Forms drop down menu at the top left and choose "Delete Social Sec". It will ask you to confirm, click on "YES" and the form disappears.

Go back to " Step-by-Step" and try opening the Social Security entry again. It should work now.

(Note that a new Social Sec form will be generated and TT should work again)

CAN NOT UPDATE Social Security - 2024 TurboTax

So, I'm confused.  Is this an issue with the 2024 Turbo-Tax software, like a bug?  I have read the replies above but can't figure out if I am doing something wrong, or this is a bug in the software and you are suggesting a work-around. Deleting forms in Turbo-Tax seems to be a dangerous thing to recommend someone to do.

FYI, my Turbo Tax software is fully updated as of this morning (1-30-25).  Please advise.  Thanks.

I am no expert, but this appears to be a bug in the software, and from the replies I have read, it has been there for several years. Though this is the first time it has happened to me, it is probably due to my first use of supporting details in the Social Security form last year (2023) and then transferring the "information" in the first steps of a new return.

I have tested the deleting of the 'SS form' several times and when you then try to enter SS data in the Step-by-step afterwards, it makes a new SS form and allows you to enter your data. If you are hesitant to delete the form, then just delete the supporting details and leave the form alone. It may work, may not ... I didn't test that myself.

If you look at the forms list for a new return, the SS form is not there. Try to enter SS data and the form appears. So, as far as I can tell, deleting this particular form doesn't seem to be dangerous ... unless you forget to enter your SS data afterwards.

BTW, I have been curious if any recent updates have corrected this problem, and as of today (1/30/2025), it still exists.

No, I am sure the problem has not been corrected yet - and I don't want to keep beating this thing to death -

BUT I hope the solution is NOT to do away with Supporting Details in some the instances like this, when they are just not working right.

I LOVE SUPPORTING DETAILS - and wish they were available everywhere in TurboTax.

CAN NOT UPDATE Social Security - 2024 TurboTax

I have the exact same problem, presumably for the same reason - I had 2 forms in 2023 and used the Supporting Documents option.  Deleting the form appears to fix the problem.  But I have the same question for TurboTax: if this is an old known problem, why hasn't it been fixed?  Or at least, why hasn't the standard TurboTax help been updated to say what to do?  Like the original poster I have been expecting this to be fixed for about 4 weeks, and the default "Help" just adds to the frustration.

I have this same problem, and nothing works that TT personnel have recommended.  It's obviously a bug, so WHY DON'T THEY FIX IT???????

Yes, this is not a high priority for TT.  Probably put on the back burner - of things to fix in the 2025 version.

However, BOTH of the suggested workarounds (delete Supporting Details OR delete the SS Form in Forms) work very nicely.   I now recommend deleting the SS Form in Forms - and let TT recreate it (seems cleaner).

Thank you!!!!!   Deleting in Forms worked!

CAN NOT UPDATE Social Security - 2024 TurboTax

Long time Turbotax user here. I'm glad that I found this thread before I drove myself crazy.

Same issue.. Imported information from last year's return. During step by step I noticed that the Social Security section was getting skipped. When tried selected Social Security I just got dumped back into the main step by step menu

Deleting the either the supporting details form or the Social Security worksheet works for me.

This is the first time I've ever encountered an issue with a supporting details form breaking the flow.

I’m using TurboTax Premier 2024.  The Social Security section under retirement plans will not open to ask questions and fill out the forms.  What is the fix to use this section? Davide80

Go to View then click on Forms.  In the Forms list, click on Soc Sec to open the Social Security Benefits Worksheet.  At the bottom of the form, click on Delete Form.

That's all.  When you go back to the Social Security step by step, it will work properly.  I wish I could get back all of the many hours I spend trying to contact TurboTax support, trying various work-arounds, starting over, updating software, etc.

Agreed with your solution! It is inexplicable why Intuit has not fixed this problem - $60.00 for software that they just don't seem to care to correct.

After importing my 2023 TurboTax return into 2024, there was no way to update SSA-1099 - clicking update just brought you back to the same place. I went into the Forms view and selected Social Sec and double-clicked on each of the yellow (user entry fields) in the Social Security Benefits Worksheet and deleted any of the supporting details that were carried over from 2023. I also noticed that the Railroad Retirement benefits button at the top of the form was checked when the worksheet first opened; be sure to uncheck this if it doesn't apply to you! I then went back to the Step-by-Step view and clicked the update button and the walk through worked as it should have the first time!

It also appears that you can no longer add supporting details in the walk-through entries; that's probably where the hang up initiated. Glad for a work around but Intuit should fix it, they owe it to their customers!
