2024 Backdoor Roth Conversion impacting fed+state refunds

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

I tried that in the desktop software.  If I change the original tax return I saved earlier, I can see the tax refund number changes.  In the original return I answered "what did you do with the money from..." with "something else."  That was my mistake.  Now in the amend, I was asked different questions about my work retirement coverage which I was not asked in original return.  Now I kind of can't get back to where I should be.  It keeps thinking I made excessive contribution.  What was wrong?

You did not amend the return.  Instead you just went into the return and made some changes.

You need to go back into the return now and delete the changes you just made so that the return goes back to how it was when you sent it to the IRS.  Then you need to leave the return itself and go to your TurboTax account.

Select the year and then click the 'amend' button and the return will open for you.  At that point you can make the changes to make the distribution non-taxable.  FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY.  If you select a wrong option then there isn't much point in doing it.
