It's quite common for neither box to be checked. What is the error message that you get? Please post the entire exact message, word for word. When do you get the error message: when you enter the 1099-R? later, in Smart Check?
You shoudn't need to make an entry for the "Taxable amount not determined" or "Total distribution" boxes. However, since it is creating an issue for you, you can try deleting the 1099-R form and that may resolve your issue as follows:
Find the Form 1099-R that is creating problems and delete it, then run the error check before you re-enter it.
Yep Deleting the form entirely and re-entering it should fix it.

In the "Online" software there is an issue with any 1099-R forms that transfers over from last year's file.
Another fix without deleting??
1) Scroll to the bottom of the page...click on <Back>
2) On the prior page...click on <Continue>
That should clear the page requiring entries for every box and checkbox....and you can make entries in only the places you need to.
