Can I make a 2016 contribution to my IRA?

Can I make a contribution to my IRA with earnings only from social security, pension and the exercise of Non-qualified stock options.           I'm finishing 2016 joint return - with both of us retired drawing pensions and social security.  Also have income reported on a W-2 with all regular taxes withheld and a "V" in Box 12 for non-statutory stock options.  Turbotax is prompting me to contribute to an IRA.  I thought you had to have "earned income" to contribute to an IRA and earning from NQSO didn't qualify?

Can I make a 2016 contribution to my IRA?

The amount reported on your W-2 that is eligible compensation to support an IRA contribution is the amount in box 1 minus the amount in box 11.
