I have guardianship over my nephew and caring for him after the death of his mother. He is receiving survivor benefits under his name. Do I need to file ssa 1099?

He is a minor and Box 1 has his name in it. He did not make income in 2017

No, your Nephew will not need to file a Tax Return if his only income was the SSA 1099 Survivor's Benefit.

Also, if you claim your Nephew as a Dependent, you will not need to include his SSA 1099 Survivors Benefits on your Tax Return.
