My 1099R shows in box 2a, taxable amount as being unknown. On my return when I am asked for the taxable amount should i just leave it blank?

Yes. If box 2a of your 1099-R is blank, just leave it blank in TurboTax. Make sure to mark the box Taxable amount not determined.
TurboTax will ask you questions to determine how much (if any) of the distribution is taxable.
