When entering a 1099-R from DFAS in your Federal return, choose 'Retired or retainer pay of the uniformed services of the U.S'. at the question 'Where is this distribution from?'
Depending on your state, all or part of your military retirement pay may be excluded from tax (or sometimes a credit is given instead). You will be asked about this in your State interview in TurboTax.
If you can clarify with more info about your state, we'll try to help more specifically.

I add 1099R and turbo says "Who gave you 1099 R? I only have 4 choices, Finacial institute or other provider.
CSA 1099. CSF 1099 And RRB 1099 R. turbo gives me no other choices. In persolal question asked if I am a member or former member of the U.S. Armed Forces (active, reserve or National Guard).
answered yes next was "David, what was your military status as of December 31, 2022? = Former member (retired, veteran, etc.)
So no choice in turbo for DFAS
Select Financial Institution, or CSA if this is a CSA-1099, and then when you get this screen, after you enter your Form 1099-R, select U.S. Government (including military).
