Box 5 of OPM's 1099R does not include dental, vision and long term care premiums paid directly from my law enforcement pension. How do I exclude these from income?

If there is no entry in your physical 1099R, it is not a software problem. You could reach out to the issuer of the form for a corrected version if you feel it is in error.

OPM is probably using an antiquated program and is not going to correct its 1099R.  Turbo Tax should ask about any additional health or long term care premiums paid directly from your pension that are not reflected in Box 5 or permit you to enter your nontaxable amount of the pension yourself.  It does not allow either option.  That seems to be a software problem.

You can't change information that is taken from an official tax form. You can neither enter information that you think should be there nor delete information. The payer must make the changes, not the recipient.

Thanks.  I understand what you are saying.  It's just impossible to get OPM to correct its errors.  I guess I will just lose some of the exclusion which I should have gotten.

The IRS gets a copy of the 1099-R form the issuer.  What you report cannot be different or you will receive an audit letter from the IRS.

There is a question in the 1099-R interview which asks if you are a retired Public Safety Officer.  If you answer "Yes" the interview will follow up by asking if your employer took money out of your pension for health insurance.  If you answer "Yes" the software will inquire how much was taken.

Thank you for your service.

You can't exclude them but you can enter them as qualifying medical expenses on the Sch A.

As a retired public safety officer, I can exclude up to $3000 in premiums.  Turbo Tax doesn't capture the dental, vision, and LTC premiums because OPM does not include them in Box 5 even though they are deducted directly from my pension.  Turbo Tax needs to ask about other premiums not included in Box 5.

Does anyone know a work around for Turbo Tax's deficiency?
