If I withdraw money from my 401k early for educational expenses (i.e. tuition), am I still subject to the additional tax?
Yes, unless another exception applies. The penalty exception for higher-education expenses only applies to distributions from IRAs, not to distributions from a qualified retirement plan like a 401(k).
