I retired in Aug 2021 and moved to NY. My former employer in MA paid me a bonus in 2022 and took MA taxes out.

Do I report this as "earned" in MA or NY? I did not work for this employer in 2022 nor did I live in MA at any time during the year.

The bonus was earned/sourced from MA.

If you're a nonresident with an annual Massachusetts gross income of more than either $8,000 or the prorated personal exemption, whichever is less, you must file a Massachusetts tax return.

You are an individual nonresident if you are neither a full-year or part-year resident.

You may be able to file a MA Non-resident return to get your MA taxes returned.  Fill out the MA return first.

Massachusetts Department of Revenue

If you are a New York State resident you must file Form IT-201, Resident Income Tax Return, if you meet any of the following conditions:

  • You have to file a federal return.
  • You did not have to file a federal return but your recomputed federal adjusted gross income plus New York additions was more than $4,000 ($3,100 if you are single and can be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer's federal return).
  • You want to claim a refund of any New York State, New York City, or Yonkers income taxes withheld from your pay.
  • You want to claim any of the refundable or carryover credits available.
