I receive a pension from California State Teachers' Retirement System. As a nonresident of California, should I be paying income tax to California?
I have not lived in California since May 30, 2013 and am a full time resident of Montana. I do receive other pensions from University of California as well as Sutter Health, but don't understand why I'm still having to pay income tax to California. It seems that I'm getting penalized for having worked in California, retired, and moved to Montana. Can you please explain?

No, you do not have to pay to CA if you live only in MT.
What you probably did wrong .... in the personal info section ... you may have indicated that you had taxable income from another state (which you don't) ... so go back and correct that entry. Then in the STATE tab simply delete the unneeded CA return.

Federal law prohibits states to tax pensions if the taxpayer moved out of states.
Still have questions?
