I have a traditional IRA basis, and I took a significant distribution, but turbotax did not ask me for the total value of my traditional IRA to calculate a non-taxable portion.

Is the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box checked on the Form 1099-R that you received?  If so, did you check that box on the TurboTax Form 1099-R?

To reach the page that asks for your basis and year-end value, you must click the Continue button on the Your 1099-R Entries page and proceed through the questions that follow.

Thank you for your reply. When I went through the questions following "Continue" I didn't get asked for my total value. Another replier asked if my IRA/SEP/Simple box was checked. (Yes, on the 1099R, but somehow No in Turbotax). When I checked that box, the followup questions include asking for my total value.

Thanks, the key was the IRA/SEP/Simple box needed to be checked. It was on my 1099R, but I had not checked it in TurboTax.

I still can't Turbo Tax to ask me the value of my traditional IRAs.  I have checked the appropriate boxes in TT as indicated on my 1099-R. I'm not have any luck with entering my total value.  Thanks for any suggestions.

To enter your 2020 IRA contribution (money you put into your IRA), open your return, search for ira contributions and select the Jump to link in the search results. We'll take you to the Traditional IRA and Roth IRA screen where you can start the IRA interview.

If you need to enter a 2020 IRA distribution (money you took out of your IRA), or a conversionrollover, or recharacterization, this is reported on a Form 1099-R, which you should get from your IRA custodian by mid-February. Once you have your 1099-R, enter it in TurboTax.

I still don’t know where to put the total value of my traditional IRAs as that box does not open during the interview process. I converted some traditional IRA to Roth IRA and it uses my entire basis when it should not. I have entered my 1099-R correctly with the appropriate boxes checked (numerous times now). I am at a loss. Can I just go to forms and enter the value of my traditional IRAs since the interview process doesn’t ask me that question. Thank you.

If you are using the CD/download version of TurboTax, you can enter on line 18 of the IRA Information Worksheet the year-end value of your traditional IRAs.

Otherwise, click the Continue button on the "Review Your 1099-R Info" page in online TurboTax or the "Your 1099-R Entries" page in the CD/download version of TurboTax to reach the page where TurboTax asks for your year-end balance in traditional IRAs.
