I have a 1099-R with box 2a taxable amount empty & box 2B taxable amount not determined (checked). Turbotax wants to know if I used box 2A as the taxable amount or not?

If your 1099-R has box 2a (taxable amount) empty and box 2B (taxable amount not determined) checked, it means the payer didn't calculate the taxable amount. You need to determine it yourself. If the entire distribution is taxable, use the amount in box 1 (gross distribution). If only part is taxable, calculate the taxable portion.

TurboTax will guide you through this process by asking additional questions. For more details, check here.

  • If the distribution is from a Traditional IRA,TurboTax ask you some questions regarding your non-deductible contributions and then calculate the taxable amount based on your information.
  • If the distribution is from a pension, TurboTax consider the entire distribution taxable unless you can calculate the taxable amount and enter it in Box 2a. Don't enter an amount unless you know the taxable portion of your distribution.

We've got help on entering your 1099-R. To get to the 1099-R section of your return:

  1. Be sure you are logged in for link below to work
  2. TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to 1099-R.
