I put my 1099-R information in correctly. I keep getting an error saying only 3000 is allowed for insurance premium. It shows a random number that does not align with anything I put in and that only $3000 is allowed.
“Forms 1099-R Summary: Line 26d- Taxpayer plus line 28c- Taxpayer, should not be greater than $3000”
could this be a glitch in the program?

Box 5 is the tax free portion so it should not be bigger than box 1. Is your box 5 bigger than box 1?
I am having the same problem. I inputted my 1099-R correctly. My box 5 is less than my box 1. Any other suggestions?
After entering your 1099-R, you'll get a screen asking how much of the amount in Box 5 is for insurance premiums. Enter an amount of $3,000 or less.
If you had more than one 1099-R for retirement distributions as a Public Safety Officer, the amounts in both Box 5's can't exceed $3,000.
If you're using TurboTax Online, close the program, clear your Cache and Cookies and return to the section and step through your 1099-R entries again.
Make sure you indicated the distribution was for Public Safety Officer, and that the funds were used to pay insurance premiums.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Unfortunately, I am still receiving the same error message.
I lowered my Health Insurance Contribution to below 3K (2,999). I watched my state tax bill increase. I made sure that I marked myself as a law enforcement officer. Then I did the Federal Review and received the same error message.
I don't imagine that you have any other suggestions for me.
I'm guessing I will not be able to e-file this year.
Did you auto-import the 1099-R? If so, please delete it and enter it by hand.
It bothers me that you note, "It shows a random number that does not align with anything I put in ". When random numbers appear, I think that garbage has been entered (not by you, but by bad data).
Oh, and as Marilyn notes, you can't exceed $3,000 on all your 1099-Rs together.
I am getting the same message. I input everything "exactly as it is noted" on my 1099-R and I am getting the same issue with the less than 3K. I was in Federal law enforcement. A number is in the box that does not correspond with anything I put in. I am perplexed as to how that number was arrived at. TurboTax has a bug in the system
Thank you for your message. I threw up my hands in frustration and mailed my taxes in this year. If you find a solution, please post. Hopefully, this problem can be avoided next year. Oh, congratulations on your retirement and thank you for your service.
Thanks for the kind words and congrats on your retirement and service. Here is what I did to get around the glitch: First I deleted the 1099-R I received for my pension. I had another 1099-R I had input that was just a small distribution I took out. For some reason, in the work sheet after I put in the amount taken and the tax assessed, the worksheet had a total in the box for insurance even though I selected no monies were used to pay insurance. Now when I entered my pension 1099-R again and input the amount taken to pay insurance, the form added the two totals together which was over the 3K limit. Honestly, I have "no idea" how the first 1099-R on the worksheet had a total. Seeing as how I could not go over the 3K limit, I subtracted the difference and input that total into the box where you had to state and amount. Once I did that, the error went away. Clearly I should have not had to do that but it worked and I was able to file my taxes online. The down side it once I adjusted it to 3K my dam fed tax owed went up by 300 bucks and the state tax (MD) went up by about 100 dollars. Go figure! I have use TurboTax since 1997. Mind you I was not in LE at that time and in previous years of filing my taxes and inputting that information. This is the first time I have run into this issue. It took some creative manipulation to get the total to 3K but it worked. I will say don't ever use the online version. I did that several years back and later that year I got audited the first time in my life. Thankfully, that year I was not comfortable with my taxes even though everything I did was completely legal (no cheating). I purchased the audit defense that year. The accountants were somewhat lazy in responding but they got it corrected and I owed nothing as the online version calculated the sale of my house incorrectly. Wonder why us little folks get audited?? I always use the store bought copy even thought this year no disk and you had to download the software onto you computer. This was a first. Again, I know this was long but I hope it helps you in the future and anyone else who sees this. Be blessed and God speed!
