I am trying to report a taxable academic fellowship that has no tax documentation. How should I enter it in TurboTax so that it appears in Form 1040, Line 7 with SCH?

You will enter your taxable fellowship while in your return by:

  • Selecting Federal located in the left side menu
  • Clicking Wages & Income
  • Scrolling to Less Common Income and clicking Show more
  • Scrolling and clicking Start next to Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  • Answer "Yes" to "Did you receive any other wages"?
  • Scrolling to Other reportable income and clicking Start
  • Entering your fellowship description and the amount
  • Clicking Done

Thank you for your help! Unfortunately, when I follow these steps, the income is reported but the SCH designation does not appear, even though I did not receive a W2 for this income. Do you know how I can add SCH and the amount earned on the dotted line next to income amount?

The amount should appear on line 21 of the Form 1040 with the fellowship heading shown on the dotted line. It will not be reported on line 1 of the Form 1040 because you did not have an information statement to input.  However, the amount should be included with your adjusted gross income that is computed on line 7 of your return.
