Here's where to enter your 1099-R:

  • In your Federal return, choose the tab for Wages & Income
  • Scroll down to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) (you might have to select Add more income and See more income to view this topic.)  Then select Edit/Add
  • On the next page, Your 1099-R EntriesEdit the 1099-R that you are discussing, or select the blue link +Add a 1099-R
If this is not what you needed, please comment.

You can use the I'll Type it in Myself option under Change how I enter my form. See Where do I enter my 1099-R?

@AmyC    What should I enter in box 15 for the Illinois State/ Payers State number if it was left blank? We'd withheld state tax on this inherited annuity to be safe, however the program won't allow me to leave it blank.

From @LeonardS:

The IRS does not use the state ID number when your return is processed.  You may use a random number for the state ID number this will allow you to continue and not impact your return.

Thank you, @PattiF! Also, would you happen to know if there is a difference considering Turbo automatically assumes that it is an IRA instead of an Annuity? I see the section once I submit the section that mentions annuities but shows a $0 entry yet lists the 1099R that's inputed as an inherited IRA.

TurboTax does not necessarily consider your 1099-R as an IRA.

  • On the 1099-R there is a check box that indicates if this document represents an "IRS/SEP/Simple".
  • There is then a follow up question asking if the box is checked.
  • The remainder of the interview focuses on how the 1099-R is taxed.
  • For instance, it asks if this is a qualified or a non-qualified plan.  An IRA is a qualified plan, and an annuity would be a non-qualified plan.
