Retirement tax questions

TurboTax does not necessarily consider your 1099-R as an IRA.  

  • On the 1099-R there is a check box that indicates if this document represents an "IRS/SEP/Simple".
  • There is then a follow up question asking if the box is checked.
  • The remainder of the interview focuses on how the 1099-R is taxed.
  • For instance, it asks if this is a qualified or a non-qualified plan.  An IRA is a qualified plan, and an annuity would be a non-qualified plan.

Please preview your tax return

  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.

    2. Federal
    3. State
    4. Review
    5. File
  2. Select Tax Tools
  3. On the drop-down select Tools
  4. On the popup menu
  5. Select View Tax Summary
  6. On the left sidebar

Select Preview my 1040.

 

Line 4a - IRA distribution

Line 4b - IRA Taxable amount

Line 5a - Pensions and annuities

Line 5b - Taxable amount
