Police officers are generally allowed to participate in "pick up" contribution plans.
You may qualify for "pick up contributions". However, your plan would have to specify that it allows for such contributions.
Your employer or plan administrator should be able to advise you whether your plan allows for these types of contributions.
State or local government entities with Section 401(a) plans are allowed by the IRS to treat certain contributions designated as employee contributions, that are paid by the employer ("picked up"), to be treated as employer contributions, and are therefore exempt from income.
