how to file 1096

How/where do I file the 1096? I searched everywhere and can't find an answer. IRS won't accept paper so have no idea what to do next. Main reason to buy Turbo Tax was to make filing 1099 and 1096 easy. It sure isn't any more.

how to file 1096

You can do them 2 different ways from the Windows Desktop Home & Business program. Either Online using Quick Employer Forms (QEF) -or- directly on your computer with the built in W2/1099 Reporter.

If you pick the choice to prepare them on your computer instead of Online you will have to print and mail them to the IRS (which the IRS doesn't want you to do). You can only efile using the QEF Quick Employer Forms. So you would have to start all over and choose the other method and re enter them into the Online QEF.

In the Window's Home & Business Desktop program to Prepare W2s or 1099s, click the big blue button to Start a New Return or go up to File-New Tax Return.
Then on the next screen it asks What would you like to do?

If you get a screen with 2 choices, Check the second circle that says Prepare W-2s and 1099s for my employees or contractors. Then that will expand and give you a choice to prepare them online or on your computer.

If you get a screen that says Continue your Tax Return and a box listing your returns then go up to FILE - New Tax Return again and you should get a box to pick the type of return you need to prepare. Pick US Forms W-2/1099 Reporter

Or if you are in your return, you can go to Business Expenses and click on Contract Labor. It will have a link to go directly to the Online Quick Employer Forms.

Thanks so much. Guess I'm getting too old for this. After I posted the question I found the 1096 in the dropdown. I thought you HAD to efile and the IRS didn't accept paper because it wouldn't scan. Guess I can print and send snail mail. I have looked for the QEF (sp) and couldn't find it on the Turbo Tax website or I would have used it. I used the 1099 forms from the IRS website to send to the vendors in a timely manner and just need to file the 1096. Thanks again for your help.
