How do I show both US Social Security and the Canadian equivalent of Social Security for the same person?

To report both US Social Security and Canadian Social Security (such as CPP or OAS) in TurboTax, follow these steps:

• Add the Canada benefit and the US Social Security benefit together and report on Box 5 Net Benefits for 2023.
• The Canada social security equivalent benefit is explained in IRS Publication 915, page 6:
• Under income tax treaties with Canada and Germany, social security benefits paid by those countries to U.S. residents are treated for U.S. income tax purposes as if they were paid under the social security legislation of the United States.
• n other words, if you are a U.S. resident, enter your Canadian benefits as though you had received a Form SSA-1099 from the Social Security Administration.

Follow these directions.

1. Open or continue your return. Be sure you are signed for link in Step 2 to work.
2. Navigate to the Social Security benefits section:
   • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to Social Security benefits or search for Social Security benefits (top right magnifying glass) and then select the Jump to link.
3. On the screen Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits in 20XX? answer Yes and select Continue.
4. On the next screen, check the box beside Social Security benefits (Form SSA-1099), then enter the amounts from your form(s) in the boxes provided.
   • Add the Canada benefit and the US Social Security benefit together and report the total on Box 5 Net Benefit
