Error - SS Benefits/RRB 1099-R

Error Entry says: "Schedule 1: Social Security Benefits/RRB 1099-R  We're still working on updates related to Railroad Retirement Distributions (Form RRB-1099-R) that qualify for disaster or covid relieg. You can keep working on your return and we'll remove this message when it's ready."  I do not have any forms from RRB-1099-R  and do not understand why this error keeps me from finalizing my returns.  It has Schedule 1: Line 8 highlighted. Error - SS Benefits/RRB 1099-R

There can be many types of income that are entered on Schedule 1, Line 8, because it is the 'Other Income' category on Form 1040.  If you have any other income that was reported in this section, and if you can provide any further details we can be more helpful.

You can check any entries by using both of these sections under Wages and Income to see if you have any income entries in these sections.

  1. Other Common Income and
  2. Less Common Income

Examples of income to report on line 8 include the following.

• Most prizes and awards. But see Olympic and Paralympic medals and USOC prize money, later.

• Jury duty pay. Also see the instructions for line 22.

• Alaska Permanent Fund dividends.

• Reimbursements or other amounts received for items deducted in an earlier year, such as medical expenses, real estate taxes, general sales taxes, or home mortgage interest.

• Income from the rental of personal property if you engaged in the rental for profit but were not in the business of renting such property.

• Income from an activity not engaged in for profit. See Pub. 535.

• Amounts deemed to be income from a health savings account (HSA) because you didn't remain an eligible individual during the testing period.

• Gambling winnings, including lotteries, raffles, a lump-sum payment from the sale of a right to receive future lottery payments, etc.

These are a few examples.  You can review the list in the IRS 1040 Instructions (page 86).

Error - SS Benefits/RRB 1099-R

DianeW777 - First, thanks for your earlier response. I am totally stumped on this. I have a Form1099-R from an IRA. I have entered this multiple times and the error I previously stated shows up. It reads: CHECK THIS ENTRY.  Schedule 1: Social Security Benefits/RRB 1099-R We're still working on updates related to Railroad Retirement Distributions (Form RRB-1099) that qualify for disaster or covid relief. You can keep working on your return and we'll remove this message when it's ready.

Schedule 1, Line 8 [39292]

Diane, I do not have a Form RRB-1099-R. The Form 1099-R I have is from IRA Distribution.  I do not understand why Line 8 is highlighted and what it is asking for.  What taxable portion from Federal return is this asking for and is it asking to be changed/corrected/zeroed out?  I simply don't understand this so I can correct it.  Where can I go to get some personalized assistance so I can file this return.  I look forward to your replay. Thank you so much.  Abagoochie87

Error - SS Benefits/RRB 1099-R

My concern is that you may have accidentally selected RRB-1099R and then changed it.  TurboTax may be remembering that even though you don't have one.

My advice is to go ahead and select it, walk through the screens by selecting Continue, (you don't have to enter anything), then when you get back to the screen titled "Your 1099-R Entries', select 'Delete' beside US Railroad. Next try to check your return again.

  • You can reach this screen quickly by using Search (upper right) > Type 1099r > press enter > click on the Jump to... link

Be sure to regularly clear any cache, cookies and browsing history in your browser.  Sometimes that's all it takes for the computer to dump the information you do not want it to remember.
