Is a retirement pension from a school district considered a public or government source?

The school district is considered a part of the local government.  Therefore anyone who works for the school district considered an employee of a local government.  Public schools are funded by local taxes and are run by elected officials.

The same would apply to a state return but without knowing which state, I cannot tell you if there is any exemption for public employees.

Which question are you answering on the return?  Federal or State?  If state, which state? The answer changes based on the above questions:)
