My federal return was rejected because of a duplicate 1099R. I have two 1099R forms that are identical except for the account numbers on the 1099R forms. In other words, I have two accounts with one company and each account generated its own 1099 form. I am using TurboTax premier and I see no way to distinguish these two 1099R forms. One thought: Shall I include the account number in the Payer Name lines? Thanks in advance for your help.

Subtract $0.01 cent from one Form 1099-R and add $0.01 cent to the other Form 1099-R.

The suggested solution is for the TurboTax client to falsify his/her return. A better solution would be for TurboTax to fix the problem. I experienced a similar problem...my return being rejected twice, delaying its filing by five days, and causing me several hours and a more than a little frustration. TurboTax is aware of the problem, yet has not made the changes to its software to remedy it. This is a good example of why people move on to other tax return software providers. Tax returns are difficult enough for lay people. These difficulties don't need to be augmented by faulty products of the online software providers.
It is likely that it is the IRS that is rejecting the return. The IRS sets the standard for the data format (in XML) that e-filers have to use. TurboTax creates an XML copy of your return and send it to the IRS server that handles e-filing.
If the IRS server rejects the return because of what it perceives is a duplicate entry, how exactly is that TurboTax's fault?
It is TurboTax that rejected the form. I just spent an hour with an agent on Chat attempting to resolve the problem, who, after a lengthy process, wrote that it is a problem with TT software not recognizing that two 1099-forms, having different information entered, as being different. That is, exactly, why it is TurboTax's fault.
My wife and I have identical amounts, like some of the other posts concerning duplicate 1099Rs. However, TT asks who it belongs to in their easy step questions, and I indicate either her or myself. I find it unfathomable that TT would only check the dollar amount and not check beyond that once the amounts matched. Why not check the amounts and if they match, check the names, and if those match, check the account number?
I hesitate to misrepresent the amounts on our 1099Rs, even by one cent. We've been audited before and I don't want to be again.
If it is true that TT is aware of this issue and hasn't bothered to fix it, why am I paying good money and their filing fees every year?

This is still a problem one tax year later. I "fixed" it by adding $1.00 to one of the accounts - fearing that adding only a penny would result in a round off to the same amount. The return has been accepted - I am waiting to see if the refund is approved.
Wow .. really, you all are concerned about 1 penny ... more things in life to worry about than one penny ...
They are not concerned about 1 penny, they are concerned their returns will be rejected by the IRS. The IRS gets a copy of all 1099s, so you'd assume the IRS computer system would do a simply comparison of the individual amounts in each 1099, instead of just a total. And by the way, this bug has STILL not been fixed, I'm having this problem trying to file my 2023 taxes. I tried getting expert help. The expert wanted me to delete my entire return and re-enter it.
