Can I transfer stock directly from my Traditional lRA to my Roth or does it have to be sold first to transfer cash instead?

Roth conversions can indeed be done "in-kind." The gross amount converted is the value of the shares at the time of the distribution from the traditional IRA. IRA custodians will usually have a way to specify that you want the conversion to be done in-kind.
