Both retired living in KY. Both get Social Security. Also a 1099-R + W-2 from former employer thru Virginia. Where do we file the State Taxes?

My husband and I are both retired living in Kentucky. We both receive Social Security Pensions. He also receives a Pension 1099-R and a W-2 for group insurance from his former employer. The 1099 and W-2 are both paid thru his retirement services in Virginia now with only Federal taxes withheld. Which state (Kentucky or Virginia) would we file the State Taxes under?

Kentucky; if you have a filing requirement.  Kentucky exempts $41,110 of pension income per spouse if you both have 1099-Rs and Social Security income is not taxable at all.  The W-2 could have enough income on it that would require a return.  What you can do is input all of the information into TurboTax and then see how much tax your return would require you to pay to KY.  If the amount is zero, you don't need to file it.  You will not need to file a Virginia return because even though it is issued from Virginia, you were not working in Virginia to earn the income.
