Yes, he must file, if his income is over the amounts below.

 

Single dependents— 

You must file a return if any of the following apply.

1. Your unearned income was more than $1,100. 

2. Your earned income was more than $12,550. 

3. Your gross income was more than the larger of— a. $1,100, or b. Your earned income (up to $12,200) plus $350. 

 

To get to the rental section:

  • Continue your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
  • Click My Account (top right of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the search bar, type rental.
  • Scroll down in the results box, highlight rental (schedule e), then click GO.
  • You'll land on Income from Rentals or Royalty Property You Own. Click Yes.
