1099r - Disaster Distribution Filing

I took a disaster distribution in 2020 and answered all of the questions under IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R). I did not receive a 1099R in 2023 (for 2022). I only received one in 2021 (for 2020). When I go to wrap up my income I reach a "Did you take a disaster distribution at any time between 2018 and 2020?" page. I answered "Yes" and it brings me to "You'll need to visit the form 1099-R retirement topic
Please visit the Retirement topic IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) in Wages & Income under the Federal section." Am I doing something incorrectly?

it depends.  To clarify, what was the disaster you took the distribution for?  Was it COVID?

Yes! It was in 2020 a withdrawal from my 401k   Under the CARES act.

As DaveF1006 was trying to determine, if you took a disaster distribution in 2020 for covid and correctly filed the From 8915-E for spreading out the distribution over 3 years you would have taken/will take, 1/3 each in 2020, 2021, and 2022.  If you did not take an additional retirement distribution outside of the disaster distribution you would not have been sent a 1099-R.

If you did take the disaster distribution and followed the correct procedures, you need to include 1/3 of the distribution in 2022.

Below are the instructions from the IRS about Form 8915-E

Under income, my previous years data did popular into IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) for the disaster distribution. However, when I go to wrap up my income I reach a additional "Did you take a disaster distribution at any time between 2018 and 2020?" page outside of the IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) income portion. I answered "Yes" and it brings me to "You'll need to visit the form 1099-R retirement topic

IRS form 8915-F Qualified Disaster Retirement Plan Distributions and Repayments allowed you to spread the payment of taxes for a retirement plan distribution over tax years 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Forms availability says that the form will not be available until February 16.

1099r - Disaster Distribution Filing

Hi James - I think I am a little confused as the instructions for form 8915-F say:

When Should I Not Use a Form 8915-F?

Reporting coronavirus-related and other distributions for qualified 2020 disasters made or received in 2020. This form replaces Form 8915-E for tax years beginning after 2020. Do not use a Form 8915-F to report qualified 2020 disaster

hopefully it will not be confusing when TurboTax enables the Form 8915-F and you can go through the interview.

Wait.

1099r - Disaster Distribution Filing

Hi James, the website says the form 8915F is now available. However, I am still receiving the Please visit the Retirement topic IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) in Wages & Income under the Federal section.” message. Do you know what I could possibly be doing wrong?

To confirm, you are trying to report the 3rd portion of the 2020 Covid distribution? If yes, then please follow these steps:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on the "Search" on the top and type “1099-R”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  4. If you do not have any 2022 1099-R answer "No" to "Did you get a 1099-R in 2022?" (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info” screen)
  5. Answer "Yes" to the "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2022?" screen
  6. Answer "Yes" to "Did you take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution?"
  7. Check the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here", enter your information from your 2021 Form 9815-F, and then continue.

Please verify you don't have an entry on line C of Form 8915-F. If you do then please try these steps delete the line C entry (if you only had the Covid Distribution) to avoid rejection issues:

  1. Click on the "Search" on the top and type “1099-R”
  2. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  3. If you do not have any 2022 1099-R answer "No" to "Did you get a 1099-R in 2022?" (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info” screen)
  4. Answer "Yes" to the "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2022?" screen
  5. Answer "Yes" to "Did you take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution?"
  6. Uncheck the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here" and click continue
  7. On the "Which disaster affected you in 2020?" screen select the blank entry (click on it) and click "continue"
  8. Go through all the question
  9. On the Income & Wage screen click "Edit" next to "IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)"
  10. Click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info” screen
  11. Answer "Yes" to "Did you take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution?"
  12. Then recheck the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here", enter your information from your 2021 Form 9815-F, and then continue.

Another option is to delete "Form 8915-F" and "Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Distr" and then go back to the retirement section and reenter the information:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select "Tax Tools" and then "Tools".
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, select "Delete a form".
  4. Select "Delete" next to "Form 8915-F" and "Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Distr" and follow the instructions.
  5. Click on the "Search" on the top and type “1099-R”
  6. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  7. If you do not have any 2022 1099-R answer "No" to "Did you get a 1099-R in 2022?" (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info” screen)
  8. Answer "Yes" to the "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2022?" screen
  9. Answer "Yes" to "Did you take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution?"
  10. Check the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here" and enter your information.

1099r - Disaster Distribution Filing

Thank you, Dana! That is exactly what I am trying to do.

On the 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution, my info auto populates from my 2021 Form 8915F. Then when I go to wrap up my income, I am still reaching an additional "Did you take a disaster distribution at any time between 2018 and 2020?" page outside of the IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) income portion. I answered "Yes" and it brings me to "You'll need to visit the form 1099-R retirement topic. Please visit the Retirement topic IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) in Wages & Income under the Federal section.”

Not sure what I am doing wrong. I tried your suggestions. I did not receive a new 1099R for 2022. Do I need to be entering the one I received for 2020 from Fidelity?

Nothing pops up during the Federal Review either... it appears to allow me to move forward.

Thank you!

No, do not enter your your 2020 Form 1099-R in your 2022 tax return.  If you followed all the steps there may be one more action that could help. In my test I did have to go through the question twice to get the screen to open where I could make the entries (see below).

You should first clear your cache and cookies. It handles many issues that seem nonsensical on a regular basis.

  • Close your TurboTax return first.

Watch to be sure you are selecting 'all time' as example.  Do not use selections like 'last hour' for those browsers that give  you options.

The following are similar steps as provided by @DanaB27 and you can try those steps again after you finish clearing.

Please try the following steps if you are using TurboTax Online to see if the error message will clear:

  1. Click on the "Search" on the top and type '1099-R' > Click on 'Jump to 1099-R'
  2. If you do not have any 2022 1099-R answer 'No' to 'Did you get a 1099-R in 2022?' (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the 'Review your 1099-R info' screen) > Answer 'Yes' to the 'Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2022?' screen
  3. Answer 'Yes' to 'Did you take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution?'
  4. Check the box next to 'If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here', enter your information from your 2021 Form 8915-F, and then continue.

Thank you, Diane! I was able to get to the screen below and my information from previous returns auto populated (even after clearing cookies and caches) . However, these are the screens I see when select "Done with Income" . It does appear that I can move on to final review, even with that message -  but I am hesitant. Unless it's meant to just be a reminder?

Yes, these screens are reminders. You can move forward with your Final Review. If any other issues you will receive an alert.

You can also preview your return before e-fling to make sure the amount from Form 8915-F is flowing correctly to Form 1040 page 1 by following the steps below.

Preview your entire return:

  1. Select Print Center and then Print,
  2. save or preview this year's return (you may be asked to register or pay first)
  3. View only your 1040 form:
  4. Select Tools. Next,
  5. select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then
  6. Preview my 1040 in the left menu.
