How do I change the military status?

You can change the military status by following these steps in TurboTax Online:

  • Log into your Turbo Tax Online account.
  • Select "Take me to my return"
  • Click "My Info" located on the left side of your screen
  • Click "Edit" next to your name
  • Underneath your "occupation", you should answer "Yes or No" to the question "I am a member or former member of the U.S. Armed Forces (active, reserve or National Guard)"
  • Scroll down and click "Continue
  • If you choose "Yes", TurboTax will ask you a few questions regarding your military status

How do I change the military status?

I have tried changing my grandsons military status several times. He entered the Army in 2019 but never finished basic. He has a W2 from the Army. Turbo Tax will not let me change his status. He never deployed. I can't get past this screen.  No matter how many times I edit and click "no", the status goes back to yes. What do I do? All the info is is Turbo Tax and my last resort will be to delete everything and start over. Help!

How do I change the military status?

Since your grandson was in the military his answer to the question "military or former military" is "Yes".   Deployment status does not matter.  Once he continues from that page he will get a follow on question asking about his status on 12/31/2019.  Click "Active duty" and then select "left the military in 2019".  Additionally, when entering his W2 information, he will also select the "active duty pay" button for his Army W2.  Basic pay is considered active duty pay and will get him some tax advantages.
