Does the military member have to be the actual person filing in order to receive the free military discount?

My wife was active duty military during part of last year (and, for clarity, I was never military), so we should be eligible for the free military filing. However, I'm not sure if it matters that I'm the one doing the actual filing this year. We are planning to file married/joint.

Does the military member have to be the actual person filing in order to receive the free military discount?

Yes.

But since you are filing jointly, you will be on the same tax return with her so you will get the military discount if her ranking falls under the approved classification.

The discount applies to Online products but does not apply to Live products.

It is also not available to :

  • Officers
  • Non-commissioner officers
  • Warrant officers
  • Veterans
  • Non-enlisted services members

Please see the attached for additional information:

How do I get the discount

Who is eligible

Also when you start your return, be sure to enter her information as follows:

Go to the "My Info" from the black panel on the left side of your page.

  1. Under Personal Info Summary, select Edit to the right of her name.
  2. Scroll down below her Occupation.
  3. You will see the following asking if she is a member of the armed services.  Make sure you have checked "Yes".

Also, be aware the discount will be provided based on the input from her W-2 form.  After you enter her W-2 information, there will be a page that asks for other uncommon situations.  Be sure to select Active duty military on this page as well.
