For rent paid in 2016 is that per month or year for an apartment?

For example if I pay $600 per month do I say $7,200 (12 months times $600) or $600 because that is what I pay per month?

You report the actual amount you paid.  If you were there and paid for 12 months you report the total of 7,200. if you were only there 6 months you report 3,600.
