Mortgage Interest expense - Rental property financed through business loan instead of mortgage loan

My credit union says my loan is not a traditional mortgage loan since it was used to purchase a rental property. How do I claim the interest expense on this loan since they did not give me 1098?

Mortgage Interest expense - Rental property financed through business loan instead of mortgage loan

The Rental property mortgage interest paid in 2016 is only reported on Schedule E Line 12.

To report rental property income and expenses -

  • Click on Federal Taxes
  • Click on Wages and Income
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on
  • Scroll down to Rental Property and Royalties, click the start or update button

You do not need the Form 1098. You should have a loan statement that shows the total interest paid that you will use to enter  and support the deduction above.
