I rent a house with 3 other people, and pay my share of the rent to one of my room mates, who in turn pays the landlord. can i deduct my share of the rent?

Unfortunately,
personal rent is not deductible.
The IRS won't let you deduct rent for your personal residence. However, rental expenses for your business as well as expenses related to rental property you own are deductible.
A handful of states have some type of renter's tax credit for a personal residence or apartment. If your state is one of them, we'll asks rent-related questions when you go through your state interview.
