I got a payment for use of a patent that is in mine and others from when I worked there. Do I report this as investment income or as royalties from a business?

I don't knolw if I'll ever get additional patent royalties. I worked in a lab and my name was added to the patent and I received a random payment. Is it investment income or royalites from business? 1099misc has it in royalty box.
