The taxes that are withdrawn by AirBNB are likely local sales or hotel occupancy taxes. If AirBnB includes the remitted taxes in the amount reported as your income on your 1099, the taxes are deductible as an expense for your rental income.
To enter the taxes as a deduction, follow these instructions:
- Go to the Federal Taxes category in your TurboTax account.
- Go to the Wages and Income subcategory.
- Find the section labeled "Rental Properties and Royalties".
- Click start or update on the line labeled "Rental Properties and Royalties (Sch E)".
- Go through the rental screens until you find the screen labeled "Enter Common Expenses".
- Enter the taxes and enter the amount on the line labeled "Other Taxes".
I assume you rent out your entire apartment when you have an AirBnB guest. If this is the case, TurboTax will allocate your rental expenses based on the number of days that you rented the apartment. In the rental section of TurboTax, find the screen labeled "Was This Property Rented for All of 2016?". On this screen enter the number of days rented and the number of days used personally (365 days minus the number of days rented).
