Where is my Form 8960 in Turbo Tax and how do I get there?

Form 8960 (Net Investment Income Tax – Individuals, Estates, and Trusts) used for the 3.8% surtax on investment income for the Affordable Care Act. It first appeared in tax year 2013.

If you have income from investments and your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds $200,000 for individuals, $250,000 for spouses filing jointly, and $125,000 for spouses filing separately, we'll include Form 8960 with your return.

If your net investment income is $1 or more, Form 8960 helps you calculate the NIIT you might owe by multiplying the amount by which your MAGI exceeds the applicable threshold or your net investment income—whichever is the smaller figure—by 3.8 percent.

TurboTax Online:

1. Open your return.
2. Click on Tax Tools at the bottom of left-hand column.
3. Click on Tools.
4. Click on Topic Search.
5. Search for 8960.

TurboTax Desktop:

1. Open your return.
2. Click on Forms in upper right-hand corner of page.
3. Click on Open Forms.
4. Search for 8960

If you are using TurboTax online, you won't be able to view Form 8960, (before paying your TurboTax fee) assuming it has been created, but you will be able to see it in a list of forms that have been created for your return based on your responses to TurboTax questions.  Here are the steps to follow if you want to see what forms have been created for your return.  The steps are the same if you wanted to delete a form in your return.  

1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
2. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.  You won't be deleting a form, but you need to select Delete a Form in order to see the list of forms for your return.
4. If you wanted to delete Form 8960, or any other form, then select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

Unlike other forms in TurboTax online, in TurboTax online you will be able to view your Form 1040, and Schedules 1, 2, and 3, if applicable.   Here are steps to follow to view your Form 1040, and Schedules 1, 2, and 3, if applicable.

1. With the Tax Tools menu open;
2. Select Tools.
3. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up.
4. Then Preview my 1040 in the left menu.
5. To get back to the step-by-step instructions, just click Back in the left margin.

If you are using TurboTax CD/download, then click on Forms, upper right of your screen.  In the left margin, scroll through your list of forms to find Form 8960.  If Form 8960 is there, then click on it and it will open on your screen.  To get back to the screen(s) where you respond to questions, then click on Step-by-Step in the upper right of your screen.
