An apartment would meet those requirement if it's in California and you were there for at least 6 months. It can even be more than one apartment, as long as they are in California and together they add up to at least 6 months.

One mortage secured by 2 properties. First property is 64% of the loan, and a primary residence. The second is a rental. Do I split the interest and principal 64/34?
