Capital loss limit is $3k but TurboTax took all $18k - WHY???

Capital loss carryover from 2023 -$18,000 All capital losses used in 2024 -$18,000 Remaining losses carried forward to 2025 - $0.00 Should only use $3000 of my capital loss carryover.

If you had enough gains on your 2024 return to use the losses carried forward from 2023, then there is not a limit to the amount that can be claimed.  They were all used to lower your tax bill.

 

There is only a $3000 per year limit if there are not gains being offset by the losses.  If there are only losses to consider, then you can only take $3000 in loss per year.
