Can't Import 1099 - no Tab opens in Browser

Trying to import from Schwab and Fidelity.  Import tells me to find the institution, continue, then a page that has me click "Continue" to open a tab in my default browser.  No tab ever opens up. I started with Firefox, changed to Chrome and Edge, turned off security and allowed popups/redirects.  Nothing, just ignores me.  Last night I had tried to import Fidelity and got a response it was doing maintenance so I thought there was some connection, but today there is just ... nothing.  I really don't want to do manual entry as some of the brokerage info is quite lengthy.  That is the whole point of import.  In the past I found that the turbotax needed internet explorer to open within the program, I have no idea what is happening here.

Can't Import 1099 - no Tab opens in Browser

I ended up using this method of starting an online TT return, importing there and then saving the tax file and continuing in the desktop version.  Still had to review hundreds of entries since many were miscategorized, but got it to match my 1099-B summaries from the financial institutions.

Haven't completed the taxes yet, but I hope this works out and I don't have a separate issue with the online stuff since I already purchased the desktop version

If you are using TurboTax Online, try importing using a different browser.

If you use the Brave browser, you have to turn off the Brave Shields.

Using desktop premier, I was very specific about the browsers I used.  I've seen this answer several times which makes it look like a cut and paste rather than reading the actual issue.  Is Brave recommended?

Brave is not necessarily recommended, I have just seen that be an issue for several people. People seem to be having different issues and there is no one thing to do. Some people are successful in one browser and another is not. Sometimes it's a firewall or a pop-up blocker, but not always. These seems to be no rhyme or reason to what works for some and not for others.

That's sad.  Retired in 2022 so we made a lot of account changes through our financial planner and of all the years to need import working, this was the one.  Have not had a problem with this for many years.

This is frustrating since there is no error, nothing to indicate what is going wrong. I even uninstalled, rebooted and re-installed TurboTax just in case, as well as turning off all firewalls, etc.  It ignores the button to open a tab so the browser is not even accessed.

I can't give any thanks or mark anything as answered, as downloads are a huge part of why I use turbotax.

I just ran into this with TT 2024 Home & Business, trying to import from Bank of America. After trying several fixes, what fixed it for me was a security setting under Windows Settings, Network & Internet, Advanced Network Settings, Internet Options, Security tab. Mine had defaulted to a Medium High security zone. I changed it to Medium and that fixed it.

I tried the method @santonski suggested prior to trying to download data in TT Premier.  Everything worked great!  Don't know if this was it or if Intuit made some updates, the look and feel was a bit different but the browser popped open and did the login to my financial institution. Credit to @santonski for a good result.

I am having the same problem with Charles Schwab 1099 import on TurboTax Deluxe 2024 desktop version for Windows 11. I tried the solution mentioned in this thread, as well as almost all the steps in the "Troubleshoot TurboTax Desktop for Windows issues" article.

But still no luck getting the "We'll open a tab in your default web browser to get started with your Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. import. Select OK to continue." pop-up to do anything when clicking "OK". No tab has ever once popped up in any browser.

Here's a non-exhaustive list of things I've already tried:

  • Retrying
  • Restarting browser
  • Restarting Windows
  • Disabling VPN extension
  • Disabling ad blocker extension
  • Installing a new browser
  • Changing default browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave)
  • Enabling pop-ups in browser
  • Enabling pop-ups in internet security settings
  • Restarting TurboTax
  • Installing TurboTax updates
  • Running TurboTax as administrator
  • Running TurboTax in compatibility mode
  • Running the Windows compatibility troubleshooter on TurboTax
  • Confirmed network is a "Private" network
  • Confirmed API access is enabled in my Schwab account
  • Adding https://*.intuit.com to trusted sites
  • Lowering the security zone of internet sites to Medium
  • Lowering the security zone of trusted sites to Medium-Low
  • Adding TurboTax to the list of exceptions for Windows Defender Firewall
  • Turning off Windows Defender Firewall

What am I doing wrong??!

Can't Import 1099 - no Tab opens in Browser

The only thing that worked for me last year was starting a TT online return, importing the financial institutions, then saving the tax file and loading it into the desktop (see the link I referred to above). I made sure I saved my original file under a different name to prevent overwriting just in case.  I've been using Premier for the last several years and Deluxe before that, last year was the first time I had import issue.

Best of luck.

I have the same problem importing from Schwab.    Keeps getting Error "Unable to connect".

For a connectivity error, here's How to Turn Off Anti-Virus Programs.
